Recently I had a discussion about what & who is considered arrogant, which in my case I have friends , family & acquaintances that would most likely think of me as arrogant. I myself do not think I am ,which maybe a bias view but I would think, can be backed up by a clear & precise argument following the definitions & views. I feel a large amount of people mistake over confidence or warranted pride for arrogance and that is where my point is emphasized.
Arrogance Vs Over-confidence
If I asked you to walk a few meters, then turn around and walk back to where you were, could you do it? Of course you would; that’s because you did it hundreds of times before. This is exactly how self-confidence is built: by going through the same experience many times until we master it. When we’ve done enough of something, we tend to become confident about doing it.
What if you manage to succeed in doing something that others normally fail in doing? Take for example, an entrepreneur who starts a small company then succeeds in expanding and developing it until it becomes a resounding success and a profitable enterprisen. This person might end up being arrogant; he may start to think that his business ideas are perfect and that he is invulnerable to external business threats. So self-confidence is about knowing your strengths and weaknesses while arrogance is thinking that you are invincible or at least trying to appear as if you are.
Arrogance and Inferiority Complex
Sometimes the real reason for acting in an arrogant way is to hide one’s own feeling of inferiority. A person who tries to give the impression that he’s invincible may be hiding some kind of vulnerability that he is feeling. If someone claims that he is a normal good person, there’s a good chance that he actually is, but if someone claims that he is superhuman then he is probably feeling exactaly the opposite and is trying to compensate for it by appearing superior.
